About Koliganek
Koliganek is located about 350 miles SW of Anchorage. It sits on the banks
of the Nushagak River which is world famous for its hunting and fishing
opportunities. There are no roads to Koliganek. All supplies are barged or
flown into the village. A post office, small clinic, and mini mart serve this
community that has a winter population of less than 200 people. Some
homes have telephones but the main source of community communication
is by using CB radios. Bring a calling card if you plan to call home. Houses
are frame construction with electricity and plumbing. All electricity is from
generators and cost 50 cents per kilowatt so please conserve. The main
source of heat is wood stoves backed up by oil heaters. The people of
Koliganek have existed there for thousands of years. They are intelligent,
honest, quick to smile, slow to speak, incredibly patient, and happy with their
basic subsistence lifestyle. There is no crime in their community. Most of the
community cash income comes from the commercial harvest of salmon.
Hunting and fishing provide most of the protein in their diet. All transportation
to and from the village is by air, boat, quad, or snow machine. The main
religion is Russian Orthodox. Most people care little for politics or foreign
policy. Family and friends are what they value most. Wolves have contributed
to a collapse in the caribou herd. Moose have also been adversely
impacted. Wolf hunters are very welcome in Koliganek.
