Daily Routine
This is not an early morning hunt. For safety you will not leave the village
before your guide can see well enough to read the landscape for danger.
Once the sun rises, it is easy to spot the "glow" of tracks from almost 1/2
mile. With your guide leading you will follow routes that will take you in huge
loops that return you to the village. It is not uncommon to travel 80 miles a
day. When fresh tracks are crossed its "GAME ON!!" Tracking speeds are
usually 25-30 mph. As soon as wolves are spotted this may increase to 45
mph or more.
As you close in on a wolf your guide will wave you to pass him. Once you
are right on top of the wolf, slam on the brakes, chamber a round and blast
away. Some shots will be as close as 10 feet. Quickly throw the rifle over
your shoulder and take off after another wolf. Later you will return to recover
your wolves. Usually you return to camp before dusk. Snow machines are
refueled and basic maintenance is performed before dinnner. Your help is
appreciated. After dinner that bed will be very welcome.
